Balfour oil spill no longer a risk, Interior Health says

Interior Health says an oil spill from the MV Osprey 2000 ferry into Kootenay Lake no longer poses any potential health risk.

The spill of 150 to 200 litres of gear oil occurred near the Balfour ferry terminal in April.

The health authority issued a warning for recreational water use along a 400-meter stretch of shoreline.

However, spokesman Karl Hardt says an environmental consultant’s report completed Monday shows no evidence of remaining oil from the spill.

The spill was caused by an equipment failure.
