UPDATED: Meteorites found near Crawford Bay

University of Calgary researchers have located the first meteorites from the fireball that streaked across our region on Labour Day.

Professor Alan Hildebrand says based on its trajectory they thought it landed on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake.

That proved to be correct and they’ve now recovered pieces northeast Crawford Bay.

The first nine pieces are the size of fingernails and were discovered on private property Oct. 29 by Fabio Ciceri, a master of science student from the University of Milan.

He calls it a dream come true.

The meteor was estimated to weigh up to five tons when it entered the atmosphere and lit up skies across BC, Alberta, and the US.
