PCSS students will have more access to health services at school

Prince Charles Secondary School in Creston has launched a new student hub.

The hub offers a variety of health services including access to a doctor, public health nurses and Valley Community Services outreach workers and counsellors.

Principal Scott Cobbe says he began work to open it last October but started thinking of adding more services to the school almost three years ago.

He says community members were on board with the idea almost immediately.

Two family doctors will alternate months they are available within the hub.

Dr. Nerine Kleinhans, one of the doctors participating, says the services provided will make a huge difference for the students.

Valley Community Service’s Amber Riel agrees.

She says Valley Community Services has a contract with the school district already – being part of the hub is an add-on.

School Counsellor Mike Fischer says the hub provides better access.

He says although the hub has only been open for two weeks he’s already heard positive feedback from the students.

The health professionals from outside of the school will be available Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
