Creston Council Candidates: Debbie Cherkas

Debbie Cherkas means business.
That is the message on the top of her flyer and the demeanor she gave the Mycrestonnow.com newsroom.
Business aside, Cherkas shares the passion that drives her to run for council this election.
“I feel passion for this town and the community we live in, and Creston is a beautiful community.  We have a beautiful little lake, the downtown core is wonderful, the people are fabulous and the citizens are concerned about all aspects of life and that’s the passion that drove me to run in this election.”
Cherkas has a system in mind for future projects, she explains her focus on fiscal responsibility and budgeting long term.
“Cradle to grave practices and costing. insuring that we have the cost-benefit analysis done on all projects. To make sure we have the funding in the future. We can plan for the future better, and I believe we should transition to zero-base budgeting for general expenditures. That way it makes everyone accountable and you no longer can ‘guarantee’ that the budget is going to be there… you have to justify your budget.”
Cherkas stresses the importance of economic development and says that Creston’s business taxes hover around the medium range compared to other communities. However when it comes to property taxes, she says Creston sits close to number two.
