Creston Legion commemorates 100 years since Armistice

Creston’s Legion is hosting a number of ceremonies to commemorate the 100 years since armistice on November 11.

The ceremony will start at 10:00 AM with a church-like service.

Tammy Sommerfeld, bartender and organizer at the Legion says the service will continue outside in a wreath laying ceremony followed by a warm respite featuring homemade stew.

“After the ceremony outside we have a beef stew upstairs. We’ve been doing that for 40 years.”

Sommerfeld says their cadets were hard at work attending events and selling poppies in the days leading up to the ceremony.

“Our cadets are out every Saturday from the 26th of October until the 10th of November selling poppies. They go to the hockey games and go out to businesses.”

If you are an early riser, Brian O’Niel will be joining 1000 other pipers worldwide in a rendition of the Battles O’er at exactly 6:00 AM at the cenotaph.
