Rural Creston-area recycling depots may close

Expect some rural recycling depots on the East Shore and around Creston to close next year as part of a new contract between the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Recycle BC.

East Shore regional director Garry Jackman says the depots at Gray Creek, Wynndel, Kitchener and on the Lower Kootenay Band property will all likely get chopped.

He says they won’t be able to afford to keep all the existing depots.

The RDCK expects to maintain 12 core depots plus a number of other satellites, but those will have to meet new standards such as fencing.

Some depots are also being eyed for closure because Jackman fears reduced hours will result in too much congestion for neighbouring businesses.
