Duplication in service prompts Davis Drive yard waste drop off closure

Creston residents must drop off yard waste solely at the RDCK  landfill in Lister rather than the now permanently closed Davis Drive yard waste drop off site.

The landfill is accepting yard waste free of charge for the months of April and October.

There will also be a free yard waste curbside pick up starting April 22 depending your regular garbage pick up day.

Director of Municipal Services Ross Beddoes says the Davis Drive pilot project grew in size and cost the Town up to $39,000 last year.

“That was unfunded, so we had to cut and squeeze from other departments and several other projects in our parks, and our trails did not get done because this money was being allocated to the yard waste drop off.”

Beddoes explains why the popular service was closed down.

“It wasn’t taken lightly. There was a lot of discussion around it. But it was a service, a duplication of service that the Regional District of Central Kootenay already provides and that the residents of the Town of Creston are taxed for.”

Aside from the free drop off months and pick up service already mentioned, yard waste can still be dropped off for a small fee for the rest of the year at the RDCK landfill.
