Canfor Temporarily Curtailing Production Capacity in BC

Creston is not affected by Canfor’s decision to temporarily curtail its operations at all of their dimension mills in British Columbia.

According to an announcement by Canfor on Wednesday, they are cutting back their production output as a result of low lumber prices versus the high cost of fibre.

Canfor spokesperson, Michelle Ward says all BC sawmills, except for Wynnwood near Creston, will be down for one week starting Apr 29. Two mills will be down for a second week in May

She adds the company regrets the impact the curtailments will have on employees, their families and their communities. The WynnWood Sawmill in Wyndell  is not a dimension mill and is thus not impacted by the Canfor curtailment.

While production will be cut by 100 million board feet, Canfor has an approximate annual capacity of 3.8 billion board feet at its 13 sawmills across Canada, the majority of which are in the interior of BC.

On the same day of the announcement, Premier John Horgan was in Castlegar to speak with members from the local forestry sector.
