Trails a top priority in master plan survey

A Parks and Recreation Master Plan was unveiled last week at the Creston And District Community Complex.

1255 Households participated in a survey spanning the Town of Creston and Electoral Areas A, B and C. What was found was that trails are on the top of the priority list with 79% of respondents saying they participate in the activity.

RC Strategies and Perk Consultant, Rob Parks, outlined their findings to community stakeholders.

“Trails come up fairly high. One of the reasons for that is everyone can use a trail. So I can be a young mom or have a little kid and push them on a stroller. If I’m an older person with some mobility issues, if we have a good trail system I can still use that. I can use it to commute or I could use it for my own fitness and recreation,” he said.

At the top of the list for indoor facilities are gymnasium and fitness facilities, as well as an indoor climbing gym. Another high priority project is better lake access.

When it comes to the broad gain of having healthy Parks and Recreation infrastructure, everyone wins according to Parks.

“We have a healthier community, we have people connected to each other. Frankly, when we have people engaged in in this, maybe they’re not doing something they otherwise shouldn’t be doing.”

Multiple store owners, representatives from the Town and Trails for Creston Valley Society were in attendance.
