CFR rescues climber over 300 foot slope

A recreational climbing injury required a slope rescue over the weekend.

The climber had possibly broken their ankle according to Creston Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Randall Fabbro. He says Crews descended a 300 foot slope and raised the injured person up via a rope – pulley system and basket stretcher.

“There was a person doing some ascending and descending and slipped and smashed their ankle and [possibly] broke it. So we had to go down an about 300 foot slope and carried her out to the ambulance just up on the highway.”

Only 12 days prior, CRF and the Canyon Lister Fire Department were doing training exercises together for slope and embankment rescue.

“We do regular training practices” Says Fabbro. “Plus we do an extra training night a month. For vehicle extrication, rope rescue, those specialized services.”

It was a busy day, later in the evening CFR along with neighbouring fire crews were dispatched to deal with the Arrow Mountain Fire on June 16.
