The Nelson Police Department has once again made it’s formal request for the budget to hire two more officers.
The request to council is largely academic.
That’s because the city and NPD are still waiting for a final ruling from the provincial director of police services to determine if indeed the police are justified in seeking to bolster their numbers.
Deputy Police Chief Paul Burkart insists the 18th and 19th officers are needed.
The cost of the two extra officers and an admin person, around $300,000 a year and rising, would likely mean a tax increase for residents.
