Bears in Castlegar might have a hard time picking through garbage bins once hibernation is over.
This because of the new bear resistant waste containers being dealt out to residents.
Jenny Wallace, Castlegar’s Community Coordinator for Wildsafe BC, says the new bins have been successful elsewhere.
The city is purchasing the new bins with savings from moving to a bi-weekly waste collection schedule.

The changes make castlegar eligible to become a Bear Smart Community.
Wallace is confident the city will apply for that designation.
