Creston RCMP say no immediate concern over public safety following firearm theft

Creston RCMP say there is no immediate concern over public safety following a firearm theft from a downtown business.

Early Wednesday, firearms and ammunition were stolen from Mawson’s Sports on the 1000 block of Canyon Street in Creston.

RCMP rushed to the scene, but the suspects had fled before police arrived.

Now, Cst. Brett Urano with the Creston RCMP detachment says they are working with Cranbrook Forensic Identification Services and additional resources in order to identify the suspects.

Urano says the thieves left the money alone.

“Weapons and ammunition were the only things that we have reported stolen. We were told that no money was taken from the business.”

Urano says there is no immediate danger to the public.

“Anytime firearms are involved, it could be dangerous, but we have no immediate concerns for public safety. We wanted to make sure the public was aware of this happening and hopefully get some tips to further our investigation.”

The RCMP is asking anyone with dashcam footage of the area from 3 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. to contact Creston RCMP.

“Our officers are actively engaging in a video canvas of the area and collecting and reviewing video footage.”

So far, there are no descriptions of the suspects or the potential vehicle they used.

When one is found, the RCMP will release details.
