Creston brewer narrowly avoids strike

Creston’s workers at the Columbia Brewery have ratified a new contract with Labatt.

This comes following negotiations that started back on June 6.

Union spokesperson Mike Fenton says the deal was completed last night.

“The members were in favour of the agreement by 72 per cent, so we’re very happy to have that completed,” said Fenton.

On Thursday afternoon, Fenton had confirmed they reached a tentative agreement, narrowly avoiding job action.

“We narrowly avoided a strike, which would have started [Thursday] night, if necessary.”

He says the main issue was with wages, which he’s happy to report have been increased.

“We were able to receive an increase for all staff, ranging anywhere from 14 per cent all the way up to 30 per cent for some employees over the four-year term.”

A similar agreement was reached at the Labatt brewery in London, Ontario.
