Creston-born scientist dies at 92

A globetrotting plant pathologist who was born and raised in Creston has died at 92.

Dr. Richard Stace-Smith lived in the valley until entering the University of BC in 1947 to obtain his bachelor of science.

He earned his PhD at Oregon State University and worked as a research plant pathologist for Agriculture Canada for 39 years.

His speciality was viruses that affected crops.

His work was recognized with many awards. In 1999 he was honoured with the Order of BC for his leadership to protect biodiversity and conserve the environment.

He was also involved with the Vancouver Natural History Society and VanDusen Gardens among other groups.

His work took him to the Soviet Union, Uruguay, Scotland, England, Jamaica, and Australia.

He passed away Jan. 17 and is survived by four children.
